What is somatic tinnitus?
Tinnitus means hearing a sound without an external source, such as ringing, buzzing or hissing. In somatic tinnitus, the sound changes with neck or jaw movements, muscle tension or posture.
Osteopathy focuses on this musculoskeletal component. It does not replace an assessment by an ENT specialist or audiologist.
Signs that your neck or jaw may be involved
- The sound changes when you clench your jaw or turn your head
- You also have neck pain, jaw problems or tension headaches
- The tinnitus started after whiplash, dental treatment or a period of stress
- The sound becomes more noticeable after prolonged sitting or poor sleep
What does treatment involve?
Assessment
Simon examines your neck, jaw joint, chewing muscles, shoulders and posture, and asks about previous assessments by an ENT specialist.
Treatment
Gentle techniques for the upper neck, jaw and skull, combined with work to relax the surrounding muscles.
Self-care
Neck and jaw exercises, along with advice on posture, stress and sleep.
Realistic expectations
| Situation | How osteopathy may help |
|---|---|
| Tinnitus with a clear neck or jaw component | Treatment is often worthwhile |
| Tinnitus following noise trauma or hearing loss | Limited benefit, possibly supportive |
| Sudden-onset tinnitus or hearing loss in one ear | See your GP or an ENT specialist first |
Frequently asked questions
Can osteopathy cure tinnitus?
No treatment can promise that. However, patients with somatic tinnitus often find it less bothersome when neck and jaw tension decreases.
Should I see an ENT specialist first?
We recommend this, especially for sudden-onset tinnitus, tinnitus in one ear or hearing loss.
